Tondu

On the A4063 between Maesteg and Bridgend is Tondu. The industry of South Wales is reflected well in this area. Since its establishment as a coal-mining village in the late 18 th century, Tondu has also developed an iron-works and a brick-works respectively.

On August 26 th , 1892, a disastrous explosion killed 112 miners, men and boys. There were 39 survivors, some of which were trapped underground for a week. There is still a memorial in the area consisting of 112 stones.
