Grand Re-opening for Raglan Castle's 'Hokey-Cokey' Staircase

The mid-15 th century grand staircase at Raglan Castle is to re-open following a major conservation programme by Cadwraeth Cymru, Cadw's works arm. It is a particularly fine and early example of a processional stair which would originally have been used by the guests of the Earl of Pembroke, who would have paraded out of their well-appointed apartments across the Fountain Court to the great hall for their meals.  A topping out ceremony will take place at 2.00pm on Friday, 18 th February 2011 in the company of Cadw's Chief Architect, Trefor Thorpe.

The staircase has been given the nickname of the 'Hokey-Cokey Staircase' because in its 550 year history it has been put in and taken out, at least three times. This has left badly-disturbed and puzzling remains. It has taken numerous attempts to record the remains and gather evidence in order to reconstruct its original form.
