Excessive or unwanted hair can be an embarrassing problem. If you have unwanted hair and you've thought about laser hair removal, but don't know who to trust, then Daniela Evans of Beauty Advance Laser Clinic of Whitchurch can answer some of the questions you may have about laser hair removal.

BEAUTY ADVANCE

How does laser hair removal work?
Highly controlled flashes of light energy are selectively absorbed by hair-filled follicles. The melanin absorbs the light, heats the hair shaft destroying hair regrowth but not the surrounding skin.

How many treatments will I need?
The growth cycle will be influenced by age, hormones and gender. We recommend a minimum of 3, on average 5-6 treatments.

Can all hair colours be treated?

Lasers and Intense Pulse Light (IPL) work best on dark hair because the pigment melanin absorbs the laser light. Fair hair can respond well, but white hair, grey hair, very blond hair and some types of red hair respond poorly to lasers and IPL's unless stained using a special melanin encapsulating solution.

Can all parts of the body be treated?
Using the latest laser technology we are able to treat all areas of the body quickly, safely and effectively. Is the treatment permanent? No single laser system destroys all hair follicles. Some follicles are destroyed, others are miniaturized and some enter a prolonged resting phase. It is possible that with a sufficient number of treatments, true permanent hair removal can be achieved.

Is the treatment painful?
No. However, there is a slight discomfort usually described by patients as a warm tingling sensation. No local anaesthetic is required as the treatment is tolerable. The treatments are so effective that patients can return immediately to work or their daily routine and hence there is no lost time.

Are there any after effects?
Redness, and some discomfort of the area (like sunburn) may be present for the first few days following treatment. Blistering may occur in a small minority of patients, and this settles without treatment in a few days.

How is laser hair removal different
from electrolysis hair removal?

Laser hair removal is much faster. Electrolysis hair removal requires more time because it's a process that treats only one hair at a time, whereas laser hair removal treats many hairs per every laser pulse. Laser hair removal for an area like the underarms for example can be treated in only 20 minutes.

Is it safe?
We are registered by the Health Inspectorate of Wales (HIW) which ensures that we adhere to protocol at all times for your peace of mind.

What's the minimum age for laser hair removal?
There really is no age limit, but we never treat toddlers. Young people that are not finished growing will develop new hair as they grow, and will require touch ups to maintain the results. We currently do not treat children under the age of thirteen.

What's the best advice you could give for someone considering this or any other beauty treatment?
Always pop in for a free of charge consultation to find out more about the clinic, and the practitioner treating you. After all, people buy from people and there needs to be a trust and confidence built between the client and practitioner. The best practitioner will be honest about what can be achieved. Ask to see client testimonials.
